Take 5 with Valerie Gascoigne-Kaimarama

Redcliffe born or Redcliffe lured?

I emigrated from NZ to Brisbane 18 years ago with my husband and our two sons.  We were quickly lured to the family-friendly Redcliffe community and the laid back tropical feel of the Peninsula seaside.

What does your business/job involve?

I am a mature aged (50+) Personal Trainer with my own fitness studio “GK Fit” in Snooks Street, Clontarf.  My niche market is the 40-65+ demographic. As I too am in this demographic – I know it, live it, love it and take care of it! My programmes are designed by me for likeminded functional fitsters and longevity lifestylers who appreciate smart, relevant, safe and sustainable training methods.  I offer individual Personal Training as well as small group classes of approx. 10. Clients enjoy the intimately friendly, non-judgmental and supportive training environment of a ‘made for them’ personalized studio wherein they are closely monitored by me throughout.

Suburb you live in and why you love it?

I live in the Margate Village area. I’m a quick car/bike ride away from my Studio. Definitely lifestyle living for me!  I’m walking distance to local businesses, shops, cafes and eateries, my fave op and vintage shops (I’m a retro style girl) and when it all gets too funky – I head for the tranquility of the nearby beaches!

How do you unwind?

I lie on my studio floor and “stretch” out tight tired muscles while listening to mellow soulful music. I enjoy café’ing or dining out with family/friends, meditating, reading, Netflix and a walk/run with my dog, Oscar, on the beachfront while listening to podcasts.

Best coffee haunt in town / best watering hole?

I love a good coffee but I particularly enjoy them at cafes which are tucked away on the outskirts, where I can quietly chill and hang out, eg. “The Old Corner Shop” cafe, cnr of Dunbar & Victoria Streets, Margate.

The Peninsula is the perfect place to live & work, maybe it’s the sea breeze, stress-free traffic conditions, whatever it is, Redcliffe Peninsula locals are some of the friendliest people you’ll meet!
