Caravan safety program to roll into Redcliffe
Published 7:00am 2 November 2023
Caravanning Queensland has partnered with the State Government's StreetSmarts program to roll out a statewide caravan safety program.
VANSafe Queensland is making its way to Redcliffe from November 10-11, to educate recreational vehicle owners on how to hit the road safely, compliantly and confidently.
The program comes after startling data shows 42 fatalities were reported on Queensland roads this year.
In 2022, Queensland Police reported nine out of 10 vehicles towing caravans were exceeding the weight limit.
Queensland has the highest count of registered recreational vehicles in the nation at 201,477. In addition, RV registrations have increased by more than 20 percent in the past five years.
Caravan Trade and Industries Association of Queensland CEO Jason Plant says it’s crucial to educate and support both new and seasoned drivers.
“While all RV owners and drivers have a responsibility to educate themselves on safe caravanning practices, the more we can do to support both new and seasoned drivers, the more confident and compliant they’ll become and the safer our roads will be for all road users,” Jason says.
VANSafe Queensland has been implemented in 11 different locations across Queensland since April 2023.
“This program has been able to provide support and educate more drivers in more regional locations across the state, and to promote safe caravan practices in a highly engaged and interactive way right throughout Queensland,” Jason says.
“The rising popularity of recreational vehicles indicates we have more drivers on our roads who are either new to caravanning or who might have returned to it after some time away, so they may not be used to handling a longer and heavier vehicle.
“It's important that drivers who are inexperienced in manoeuvring such large vehicles can do so safely in order to avoid becoming a danger to themselves or other vehicles.”
While the event is free, bookings are essential.
