Guide to summer fun

The summer school holidays can feel like they stretch on forever, so to avoid inevitable calls of ‘I’m bored’, we have put together this guide of activities across the Peninsula this December and January. Many are free or low-cost.

Art collection up close

What: Redcliffe Art Gallery will be transformed into a fun-filled, mind-expanding activity space for all ages. Meet a few local artists and enjoy plenty of free art activities.

When: Saturday, November 25 to Saturday, February 3, from 10am-4pm

Sensory Santa

What: Create memories this Christmas by capturing a family photo with Santa using your own camera. This activity especially welcomes families with neurodivergent children. Each booking will be 15 minutes.

When: Sunday, December 17 from 9-11am

Cricut Christmas decorations

What: This parent-child Christmas decoration activity uses Redcliffe Library’s Cricut machine. Select a design and watch the machine create it for you, then fold and glue your decoration to take home.

When: Thursday, December 21 from 9-10.30am

Mini monument workshop

What: Create a clay animal sculpture at Redcliffe Art Gallery. Learn about air-drying clay and basic sculpting techniques. The workshop includes all materials and light refreshments.

When: Saturday, January 13, from 2-3pm

Optical sound workshop

What: Join Ross Manning to learn how to turn light into sound at this wild and wacky workshop. There will be the opportunity to make light-sensitive pick-ups that translate into sound.

When: Saturday, January 20, from 10.30am-noon

Snake Boss show

What: Meet Julia Baker, the star of Animal Planet’s Snake Boss series, and learn about native pythons and lizards. Everyone gets a chance to hold a snake after this all-ages show.

Guide to summer fun

Build a LEGO vehicle

What: Build a towing vehicle using LEGO bricks with the principle of construction, engineering and problem solving. This event is suitable for children aged 6-11 years.

When: Thursday, January 11 from 1-2.15pm

Messy play

What: Drop into the Redcliffe Library and play with playdough, paint, craft and more. Dress for getting messy. This activity is suitable for under 5s.

When: Wednesday, January 3, 10 and 17 from 9-10am

Magical exploratorium

What: Learn about simple science reactions at the Redcliffe Library by using magical-based activities and create slime to take home.

When: Friday, January 12 from 9-10am and 11am-noon

Decorate a T-shirt

What: Use the Redcliffe Library’s Cricut machines to make your own customised T-shirt. This activity is suitable for ages 13-17 years.

When: Friday, January 19 from 11am-noon and 2-3pm

3D print a pencil holder

What: Use Tinkercad to customise your own pot or pencil holder. The pencil holder will be printed using the library’s 3D printers, which will be available for pick-up after the workshop. This activity is suitable for ages 8-11 years.

When: Tuesday, January 9 and Tuesday, January 16 from 11am-noon

SENSEational play

What: Get the whole family together to explore resources that engage all the senses. This activity has been designed to be inclusive of families with sensory disabilities.
