Hampo's legacy gets major boost
Words by Nick Crockford

Hampo’s Youth Foundation, set up in honour of Redcliffe Dolphins player Liam Hampson, has been given a kick-start from Brendale business Woodland Shopfitting.

Liam Hampson, affectionately known as Hampo, tragically died during an overseas holiday at the end of the 2022 rugby league season.

At the time, he was aged 24 and just one subject away from completing his teaching degree.

Last year, Liam’s friends and family set up Hampo’s Youth Foundation to give support and opportunities to young people who may not have access to the same opportunities as others.

Interior design and fitout business Woodland Shopfitting, based in Bult Drive, was one of the first to pledge support.

It originally aimed to raise $1000 to help Hampo’s Youth Foundation provide education and sporting costs for young people in the region.

Woodland Shopfitting Managing Director Michael Casablanca said it was a cause the whole team got behind.

“We have a monthy barbecue meeting for our team, where we donate to a different charity each year,” Mr Casablanca said.

“I knew Hampo through the Redcliffe Dolphins and a few of our team here played footy with Hampo.

“The team wanted to support Liam’s family in their mission to keep Hampo’s legacy alive, while helping more young people.

“We are really proud that we doubled our original goal.”

Liam’s mum and Hampo’s Youth Foundation Board Member, Lorna Morton thanked Woodland Shopfitting for the support.

It which came at the same time the Foundation was able to provide its first grants to students – one from Keebra Park State High School and another from Redcliffe State High School.

“We started this foundation just over a year ago and have been working hard over the past year to get everything set up,” Mrs Morton said.

“The support from Michael and the Woodland Shopfitting team has been so incredible. To know so many people got behind Liam’s legacy, and our mission to help more young people achieve their dreams, is really special.

“It just goes to show that small change can make a big impact.

“To raise $2000 from everyone throwing a few dollars in at each barbecue may seem small, but it will go such a long way for these young people who just need a little support.”

Hampo’s Youth Foundation aims to help young people reach their academic and sporting goals by funding education fees and expenses, sporting fees, extra academic tutoring, sports gear, and transport costs.

“Our ultimate mission is to ensure Liam's legacy lives on by spreading his positivity, influence, and philosophies,” Mrs Moreton said.

“We will make a positive impact on the lives of young people and help them realise their full potential.”
