Residents moving in to new housing

Seniors and people with disability are among those who will call a new $10 million complex in Redcliffe home.

Construction is complete on 18 one-bedroom units built by the State Government in partnership with Bric Housing.

Accessibility is a key at the units which have wider hallways and doors for those with less mobility and those in a wheelchair.

The homes, among more than 400 delivered by the State Government in this region, have energy efficient systems including rooftop solar panels.

Queensland Government gave $9 million to the project, Bric Housing gave the land worth almost $1 million and Moreton Bay City Council waived $220,000 in infrastructure charges and development application fees.

“We know there is a need for more social housing in the Redcliffe community, particularly for seniors and people with disability,” Attorney-General and State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said.

“This is not the only social housing build underway here in Redcliffe that’s targeted towards seniors with works underway at an 82-unit project down the road supported by our Housing Investment Fund.”

Minister for Housing Meaghan Scanlon added: “Bric Housing will provide support to the residents and help to build community connections.”

Bric Housing CEO Jane West said the company was “pleased the high-quality units in Redcliffe have been completed” and will provide new homes for “Queenslanders in housing need in time for Christmas”.

Resident Ron Owen, 79, who has been forced to move several times in recent years as his NRAS tenancies have ended, was delighted with the units.

“This new unit means a heck of a lot to me. It’s a terrible big relief,” retired industrial engineer said. “I’m close to the hospital, public transport and I don’t have to worry about moving again.

“I’ve got a lot of friends around the area and I’m also close to the places where I sing and play guitar for charity.’’
